Steel Wool Studios is an Oakland-based gaming studio made up of Pixar veterans with decades of animation experience that builds virtual reality content. The company pivoted from mobile gaming to VR after its founders visited Valve in 2014 and experimented with early Vive prototypes. Releases include Quar: Battle for Gate 18 and the forthcoming Mars Odyssey, which was announced to launch on the Steam store on September 9. The studio emphasizes immersive storytelling and high visual fidelity across both gaming and narrative-driven experiences. Steel Wool has maintained a close relationship with HTC and the Vive platform while continuing to support other headsets. A $5 million Series A from HTC will give the company more freedom to expand its VR efforts.
