Overview

SwipeSense is a Chicago-based healthcare technology company that provides an electronic hand hygiene application. Its product gives hospital employees accurate and actionable data to create behavior change and reduce risks associated with healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Hospitals nationwide are currently using SwipeSense. The company plans to use new capital to grow the team and evolve its hand hygiene solution. It also intends to scale product development for new applications, including asset tracking and nurse rounding. Led by CEO Mert Iseri and other executives, SwipeSense has raised a total of $23.3M to date. SwipeSense is a Chicago-based digital health company that makes a wearable, personal hand-sanitizer dispenser designed to attach to scrubs. The device uses recyclable gel cartridges and pairs with a staff badge and wall-mounted sensors to record each dispenser use and transmit hygiene data. Additional room sensors determine which patient rooms staff apply hand hygiene, enabling usage analytics. SwipeSense reports that hospitals using its system have seen hand hygiene increase 64 percent. According to a Form D filing the company raised $9.7 million from 23 investors, following a $1.7 million fundraise last year; the company declined to comment on the fundraise. SwipeSense graduated from Healthbox, has received investment from Healthbox and Jumpstart, was a 2013 Wall Street Journal startup finalist, and is led by co-founders Mert Iseri and Yuri Malina, both named to Forbes’ list of social entrepreneurs under 30. SwipeSense builds smart, connected hand-hygiene dispensers (wall-mounted and portable) paired with an app that automates manual observation reporting and analyzes compliance data. The app provides individual compliance metrics, unit comparisons, historical trends, and intends to deliver location-specific reports to correlate hand-hygiene data with infection outbreaks. The company aims to reduce reliance on traditional hand-hygiene campaigns and help healthcare providers comply with Joint Commission requirements. SwipeSense is based in Evanston, Illinois and is a graduate of Healthbox’s first accelerator class; Healthbox helped fund its first round. According to an SEC filing, SwipeSense raised $1.7 million in its latest financing, bringing total funding to at least $2.5 million to date. The company cites the high cost of hospital-acquired infections (about $15,275 per case) as part of its value proposition.
