Sympatient
Koppel 34-36, Hamburg, 20099, Germany
Overview
Sympatient develops a ‘‘digital anxiety clinic’’ that provides therapeutic gold-standard treatments—exposure therapy and CBT—digitally and in patients’ homes. Its core product suite includes prescription-only digital therapeutics such as Invirto, which are always prescribed by medical professionals. Clinicians can answer individual questions and provide therapeutic guidance alongside the digital treatment. The company plans to use newly raised capital to grow its digital toolset for anxiety disorders. Sympatient was founded in 2017 by Christian Angern, Julian Angern and Benedikt Reinke and is based in Hamburg, Germany. The article reports the company has completed a Series A to support that expansion. Sympatient develops Invirto, a virtual reality–based psychotherapy treatment delivering exposure therapy for social phobia, agoraphobia and panic disorders via smartphone VR content plus a provided device and headphones. The treatment combines VR exposure with several hours of psychotherapy delivered through videos, texts and audio files. Sympatient says Invirto is the world’s first CE‑certified digital anxiety therapy that works at home and is approved as a medical device for the whole of Europe. In Germany Invirto is already reimbursed by the largest health insurer, Techniker Krankenkasse, and the company estimates a market of about 5 million patients for these forms of anxiety. The company raised €1.6 million in seed funding to expand cooperation with therapists and health insurers and to increase access via clinics and practitioners. The funding round was led by investiere and joined by Investitions‑ und Förderbank Hamburg (IFB) and business angels.
