Tantalus Systems offers the TUNet platform, an end-to-end WAN/FAN/LAN/Grid Edge communications system purpose-built for smart grid applications. TUNet uses IP-based networks including Fiber, WiMAX and cellular as well as 220 and 900 MHz wireless RF, and embeds software-defined radio and distributed computing at every endpoint. The platform supports automated metering, outage management, power quality monitoring, load management, distribution automation and grid optimization, and includes grid edge analytics. Tantalus has deployed TUNet across more than 115 utilities in North America, Latin America and the Caribbean; in 2016 it added 23 utilities representing approximately 700,000 meters and the company now reports over one million endpoints deployed. The company plans to expand its product portfolio beyond AMI and accelerate strategic initiatives to grow its integrated smart grid applications ecosystem. Tantalus is introducing system enhancements and new functionality via remote firmware upgrades to reduce maintenance costs and protect long-term utility investments. Tantalus Systems develops Smart Grid data communications technology, notably its TUNet wireless communications platform, for electric, gas and water utilities. TUNet automates outage detection, load forecasting, billing and reporting, demand response and maintenance. The platform aims to improve operational efficiency for utilities and service reliability for consumers. The company serves the United States and Canada from numerous regional offices and counts more than 30 utility customers. Tantalus raised $14M in equity financing to fund penetration of its energy efficiency solutions into co-op and municipal utilities. CEO Eric Murray said the funding will support product-portfolio expansion and help the company reach profitability this year.
