Tau Tech

Keiser Wilhelms gate 23, 3rd floor, Ålesund, 6003

Overview

Tau Tech developed a seabed-friendly harvesting technology over a five-year research project with SINTEF and in cooperation with the Institute of Marine Research, the Directorate of Fisheries and other marine experts. The patented and authority-tested system can identify, select and sort shells without destroying surrounding vegetation or life, providing access to previously inaccessible seabed resources. In 2022 Tau Tech was awarded an annual quota of 15,000 tonnes for Arctic scallops for the next five years and plans to reopen commercial scallop harvesting in Norway. The company estimates that the Norwegian scallop population alone could support annual export revenues exceeding €50 million and generate employment for hundreds. Tau Tech is working to adapt the method to other seabed-dwelling species and pursue international opportunities to scale the technology. Its commercialization push is supported by recent funding and credit arrangements to enable commercial-scale harvesting.
