Tomato Jos
Plot 1, Tomato Jos Road Off Old Jos Road, Km 11 Kagimi Dam, Igabi LGA, Igabi, Nassarawa, Nigeria
Overview
Founded in 2014 by Mira Mehta, Tomato Jos built an integrated model linking farmer production to processing to address high post-harvest losses in Nigeria’s tomato sector. The company provides inputs, technical guidance, managed irrigation and market access, and operates a tomato paste processing plant in Kaduna State to ensure rapid post-harvest processing. Its interventions boosted yields from a national average of about 5 tons per hectare to roughly 60 tons per hectare within its system, and more than 10,000 farmers have participated, with about 1,000 active at any time and roughly 60% of participants women. Tomato Jos has prioritized product quality and direct consumer sampling to shift preferences from imported paste to its locally produced product, and it distributes across major Nigerian cities including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Benin. The business faces working-capital constraints due to manufacturing-before-sales dynamics and exposure to rising input and energy costs, which continue to shape operational decisions.
