Tonara offers an interactive sheet-music app that “listens” to players and automatically flips pages, plus Wolfie, a teaching and evaluation tool for music instructors. The company plans to expand in China and will work with Baidu to promote and distribute Wolfie, including launching Wolfie in Chinese. CEO Guy Bauman highlighted a large potential market in China, citing over 50 million Chinese students learning piano and another 10–20 million learning violin. Tonara says it will also unveil new products and services specifically for music students and teachers in China. Financially, Tonara raised $5 million in new funding led by Baidu with returning investor Carmel Ventures and participation from Lool Ventures. Baidu’s involvement is intended to speed the company’s expansion in China and provide strategic partnership support. Tonara is an interactive sheet-music app for iPad that listens to players, follows scores and automatically turns pages. The app offers free scores and paid pieces priced between $0.99 and $2.99 and currently supports piano, violin, cello, flute and voice. The company announced a partnership with Hal Leonard, which provides access to about 200,000 publications and enables Tonara to start rolling out music from artists on the Universal, Sony and EMI labels. Tonara said users will soon be able to purchase sheet music for songs by Adele, Usher and the Beatles in the app. The company plans to support more instruments and use new funding to invest in ongoing technology innovation, secure additional publisher partnerships, and pursue strategic marketing initiatives. Tonara was a finalist at last year’s TechCrunch Disrupt and previously raised a $750,000 seed round last year.
