Touchlab
The National Robotarium, Heriott-Watt University Research Park, Riccarton, Currie, City of Edinburgh, EH14 4AS, United Kingdom
Overview
Touchlab, based at The Higgs Centre for Innovation in Edinburgh, develops an e-skin system that can be wrapped around hard or soft robots to sense pressure, location, and direction in real time. The e-skin also serves as a platform for Tele-operated Avatar technology (the Telerobot), which Touchlab is developing in collaboration with Prof Vijayakumar and Dr Ivan from Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and Dr Navaraj from Nottingham Trent University. That teleoperation technology has been demonstrated over distances of more than 600 kilometres. The Telerobot is seeing early traction in the medical sector, with a pilot scheduled with a Finnish hospital later this year. Touchlab was founded by Dr Zaki Hussein, Laura Garcia Caberol and Dr Vasilis Mitrakos. The company intends to use the new funding to strengthen its commercial and tech teams.
