Towns is a protocol and web-based chat app from Here Not There Labs designed to enable self-owned, self-governed online communities. The product pairs end-to-end encrypted chat with Ethereum-based smart contracts that are described as extensible, composable, and upgradeable. The backend will start on a proof-of-authority system and migrate toward a proof-of-stake design over time. Towns is open-source and will surface the protocol through apps, beginning with an invite-only alpha web app, a broader beta slated for September, then a mobile web app and native apps later. Governance is intended to shift to a Towns-specific DAO, and the project plans to take a cut of crypto traded within communities to sustain itself. Early access currently requires crypto-wallet login, with planned support for Passkeys to broaden usability.
