Overview
Tubular Labs provides big-data analytics and a SaaS platform to measure online video performance across social platforms. Its core product aggregates public data and APIs to track video plays, shares, likes, comments and other engagement across roughly 30 platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Vimeo and Twitch. The platform offers cross-platform benchmarks such as the ER30 engagement-rate score and monthly rankings of top video publishers to help advertisers, PR agencies, media companies and brands decide where to spend sponsorship and ad dollars. Tubular classifies videos by metadata (livestream, user-generated, studio-produced, sponsored or ad-supported) and is preparing to add new platforms—Snapchat is cited as an obvious target—and to analyze VR content longer-term. Financially, Tubular raised $10 million in a new funding round led by Marker LLC and had previously raised $21 million from investors including FirstMark Capital, Canaan Partners, Lerer Hippeau Ventures and SV Angel. The company has about 65 full-time employees and plans to grow headcount to at least 130 within the next year; the new capital will be used for product development, hiring, sales and marketing. Tubular Labs builds video analytics and marketing services that track online video and the conversations around it across platforms. The company currently tracks video on 34 platforms, capturing metrics like views, shares, viewer engagement, and the content of comments, and makes recommendations based on that analysis. Tubular's clients include Comedy Central, Pepsi, Activision, Conde Nast, Hearst, and Time, and it cites HGTV's creation of HGTV Handmade—grown to 250,000 viewers in a year—as an example of its recommendations driving audience growth. The Mountain View company employs about 45 people. It recently raised $7 million from existing investors Canaan Partners and FirstMark Capital and has now raised a total of $20 million. The new capital will be used to develop systems to track more kinds of video and provide new metrics, and to hire additional staff. Cofounder Allison Stern framed the company's ambition as becoming "Nielsen with a recommendation engine." Tubular Labs builds online video analytics and marketing tools for video publishers and multi-channel networks. Its platform is used by customers including AwesomenessTV, Maker Studios, and other local MCNs. In April 2014 the company raised $11M in a Series B. The round was led by Canaan Partners and included FirstMark Capital and Lerer Ventures, with Canaan's Warren Lee joining the board. Tubular is based in Silicon Valley and has some staff in Los Angeles. It previously received funding from Machinima co-founder Allen DeBevoise and LowerMyBills founder Matt Coffin. Tubular Labs is developing a real-time Audience Development Platform for YouTube creators, media companies, and brands to discover, interact with, and attract new audience members. The platform is currently in beta and uses a patent-pending AudienceGraph to profile audiences beyond basic age and gender demographics, analyzing preferences, viewing habits, and consumer behavior. Tubular’s tools focus on enabling deeper audience interaction and engagement to help users grow their channels. The company is led by founder and CEO Rob Gabel and is based in Sunnyvale, California. Tubular has raised $3.1M in angel and Series A rounds from investors including FirstMark Capital, High Line Venture Partners, SVAngel, Lerer Ventures, and Bedrocket Media Ventures, plus individual investors. Square 1 Bank provided a $1M debt facility whose proceeds will go toward future growth and expansion. Tubular Labs offers a SaaS-based analytics and audience-management platform for YouTube content creators and networks. Its dashboard surfaces audience demographics, preferences, viewing habits, fan identification, influencer discovery, and topic/subscription analysis. The product includes tools for community managers to find and respond to comments from superfans and to identify cross-network collaboration opportunities. Tubular is currently in private beta and is being trialled by networks such as Awesomeness TV, Bedrocket, BigFrame, Cartoon Hangover, DanceOn, DECA, Machinima, and StyleHaul, as well as creators like Taryn Southern and Chester See. Financially, the company has raised a total of $3.15 million to date, comprising a recently closed $2.5 million round and prior $650,000 in seed financing. Tubular plans to launch the product in Spring 2013.
