Unbound

107-111 Fleet Street, Ludgate House, London, EC4A 2AB, United Kingdom

Overview

Unbound operates a crowdfunding platform for books where authors pitch ideas and supporters pledge financial backing in return for rewards — effectively a "Kickstarter for books." Authors receive 50% of all profits from their projects, compared with the 5–10% royalties common in traditional publishing. To date Unbound has raised almost £1 million from supporters, and the average successful pitch raises about £15,000 from roughly 500 supporters. The company has demonstrated traction with projects such as Shaun Usher’s "Letters of Note," which secured more than £125,000 in advance pledges. With a new institutional funding round in place, Unbound plans to develop new platforms to engage the broader publishing industry, including literary agents, publishers and booksellers. The platform was launched in May 2011 by Dan Kieran, John Mitchinson and Justin Pollard and is based in Soho, London.
