Overview

Founded in 2015 in Leeds by microelectronics specialists David Lomas and David Dean, Uniphy’s core product is its BeyondTouch smart-surface platform, which turns almost any shaped plastic or glass panel into an interactive control surface. The solution allows users to find and operate functions by feel alone, giving drivers a safer alternative to traditional in-car touchscreens and offering appliance makers a sleeker, more hygienic replacement for physical buttons. BeyondTouch works with standard manufacturing methods, can add haptic or voice feedback, is highly recyclable, and operates reliably even in the presence of liquids, widening its applicability to marine cockpits, hobs and washing machines. The technology has already been trial-validated by Hyundai and Grupo Antolin, who are assessing vehicle integration. With its latest funding, Uniphy plans to design its own integrated chip to drive costs down and to miniaturise the technology for mobile devices, positioning the company for mass production. Although no public revenue or user metrics were disclosed, the company’s focus on cost-efficient, scalable manufacturing and growing automotive interest suggests a pathway to sizeable commercial adoption.
