Arquen House, 4-6 Spicer Street, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, AL3 4PQ, England
Overview
Unitary AI builds multimodal models that analyze text, sound and visuals together to classify and moderate video content. Its platform aims to simulate how a human moderator watches a video, reducing false flags by combining frames, audio and text. Customers set their own moderation parameters and typically use Unitary’s models in tandem with human teams to reduce workload and stress. The company says the number of videos it classifies rose to 6 million per day this year from 2 million, covering billions of images, and it has expanded language support beyond English. ARR is now in the millions, and the company declined to disclose its valuation. Unitary plans to use the new funding to expand into more regions and hire additional talent. Unitary is a London, UK–based startup, founded in 2019 by Sasha Haco and James Thewlis, that builds contextual AI to automate content moderation. It develops computer vision models and processes millions of videos and images every day to assess risk and harm in user-generated content for large social networks and ad-tech businesses. Unitary also maintains open-source tools, including Detoxify, a written-toxicity detector that has been downloaded over 2 million times. The company raised $8M in funding in a round led by Plural and strategic angels, including Carolyn Everson, who is joining the board. It intends to use the funds to grow the team developing its AI technology, accelerate partnerships, and continue its open-source work. Unitary is building AI to automate the detection of harmful online content and reduce reliance on human moderators. Its proprietary technology uses state-of-the-art computer vision and graph-based techniques and claims to interpret context to handle nuanced videos. The startup launched a trial of its system in September but remains in development mode. Unitary frames its mission as making the internet safer and reducing moderators' exposure to disturbing material that can cause PTSD. The company cites rising upload volumes and regulatory pressure on platforms as drivers for its solution. Financially, Unitary has completed a seed fundraise and previously raised pre-seed funding from Entrepreneur First.
