Overview

Unu designs and manufactures motorcycle-style electric scooters and has sold 10,000 scooters over the past five years. Its vehicles use relatively small, removable batteries (around 9 kg) that can be carried home and charged. The company is developing a second-generation product and is working on connected-vehicle features to integrate with scooter-sharing services. Unu sees a large market opportunity as electric scooters gain traction in parts of Asia and in Europe, where scooter-sharing operators are expanding. The company competes with other European manufacturers such as Govecs and BMW and is pursuing multiple partnerships and potential fleet customers. Financially, Unu recently raised $12 million in a funding round led by Ponooc, with participation from Capnamic Ventures, Iris Capital, Michael Baum and NRW.BANK. Unu produces a smart electric scooter that uses a portable battery delivering up to 50 kilometers per charge and can be charged at home from a 200‑volt socket. The scooter has an average charging cost of €0.80 per 100 kilometers. Unu's product is available in Germany, Austria, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The company was co-founded by Elias Atahi (Co‑Founder and CXO), Pascal Blum (Co‑Founder and CEO) and Mathieu Caudal. As of the article, Unu employed approximately 40 people (planned for December 2016). The company intends to use new funds to continue expanding its reach.
