Overview
Unwasted develops Neverwaste, a mass-production panel board made entirely from waste cardboard and packaging that can be remade indefinitely. By refining and modifying cardboard fibres the company avoids glues, resins and toxic chemicals, producing a premium-specification material for construction, furniture, kitchens and flooring. Led by CEO Rod Fountain, Unwasted validated its technology at a pilot manufacturing plant in Deeside, North Wales. The company raised a £1.5M seed round and intends to use the funds to produce a sustainable alternative to virgin wood-based panels. It plans to raise a £72m Series A to build its first full-scale production plant on a 75,000m2 site in Jutland, Denmark, which will be fully powered by renewable energy and operate a closed-loop water system. The Jutland plant is projected to convert 140,000 tonnes of waste cardboard into 160,000 m3 of panels annually, save about 170,000 trees and c.150,000 tonnes of CO2, and is expected to generate £80m in revenue per year from a single production line with customer agreements already in place. Unwasted intends to have a minimum of five sites operational in Europe, Australia, and the US by 2030.
