Overview

UpCodes operates a searchable database of building codes and local amendments and offers tools such as code search, a code-check feature, and a new AI assistant called Copilot. Copilot, built on ChatGPT-4, answers jurisdiction-specific code questions, cites relevant code sections, and can generate checklists and calculations for compliance tasks. The platform hosts more than five million code sections and 160,000 local amendments, updating roughly 7,000 items per month. UpCodes reports more than 650,000 monthly active users and over 100 million page views; since 2021 its team has doubled and revenue has quadrupled. The company offers limited Copilot access on paid plans (three questions) with unlimited access available on UpCodes Professional or Enterprise add-ons. Future plans include hiring across engineering and other departments, expanding the code library, adding more AI features, and developing additional capabilities like project management. UpCodes offers a searchable building-code database with collaboration tools and automated compliance features. It launched UpCodes AI to scan 3D models using BIM data and alert architects to potential issues, and recently introduced a code calculator that answers common compliance questions for more than 40 states. The product serves about 500,000 monthly active users and paid customers including construction firms (Stantec, ARCO National), architecture firms (SOM, Ennead), Airbnb, Cornell University and SUNY. The company targets both industry professionals and lay users (homeowners, landlords, tenants, plumbers, electricians) who need straightforward compliance answers. UpCodes plans to use new funding to hire and accelerate feature development, including automating calculations and expanding access on mobile. The company has also been involved in litigation with the International Code Council; it won a dismissal of a false-advertising and unfair-competition claim and earlier secured a favorable ruling on posting codes as public domain/fair use while a copyright suit remains ongoing. UpCodes builds a searchable, constantly updated database of building regulations and has launched UpCodes AI, a plugin that uses artificial intelligence (including natural language processing) to scan BIM 3D models for code violations. The AI plugin currently supports recent versions of Autodesk Revit and the company plans to add ARCHICAD, SketchUp and IFC support in the future. UpCodes’ database draws directly from municipal regulations and is updated almost in real time, helping architects avoid costly rework caused by missed amendments. The company reports over 100,000 monthly active users and coverage of building codes in 26 states plus the District of Columbia. During private beta, UpCodes AI identified an average of about 27 violations per project. Founded in 2016 by Scott and Garrett Reynolds, the team recently hired Mark Vulfson as UpCodes AI’s technical lead.
