Overview

VELO3D develops metal additive manufacturing systems and materials, centered on its Sapphire® metal 3D printer. The company focuses on novel metal alloys and offers calibration, metrology, and digital traceability to support high-precision production. Under a joint development agreement with Lam Research, VELO3D will develop alloys and designs critical to semiconductor capital equipment. The partnership is intended to accelerate Lam’s adoption of AM as Lam plans to significantly increase the volume of AM-produced parts over the next five years. VELO3D recently closed a $40M funding round, bringing total funding to $150M, and said the new investment will expand technology capabilities and help reach profitability by mid-2022. Lam Capital also committed an undisclosed investment as part of the strategic relationship. VELO3D develops an integrated metal additive-manufacturing solution combining Flow advanced pre-print software, the Sapphire printer, and Assure quality-management software. The company targets mission-critical industrial applications in aerospace, oil & gas, and power generation. Founded in 2015 and after four years in stealth, VELO3D commercialized the Sapphire printer in 2019; in that first year it generated nearly $30 million in sales and added seven customers, many placing repeat orders. VELO3D has a global customer footprint including Japan, Korea, and Australia. The company raised $28 million in a Series D that brings total funding to $138 million and plans to use the capital to expand its product portfolio with more machine options, compatible alloys, and enhanced software and hardware capabilities. Management expects the new capital will help the company reach sustainable profitability by mid-2022.
