Violin Memory is a Mountain View, California–based provider of memory arrays and advanced silicon storage systems for enterprise data centers. Its systems are designed to accelerate business-critical applications and enable enterprises to virtualize and optimize their IT infrastructures. Founded in 2005 and led by CEO Don Basile, the company targets performance-sensitive enterprise workloads. Violin Memory closed a $40M Series C financing to support its growth. The company intends to use the funds to accelerate product development and expand into Europe and Asia. Participants in the round included existing shareholders and new large public companies in the computer industry. Violin Memory develops chip-based flash memory arrays designed to replace hard disk arrays in corporate data centers. Its third-generation Violin 3200 Flash Memory Array can complete storage tasks in two hours that once took 12, supports around 140 terabytes per rack and achieves up to 3 million input-output operations per second. The company uses RAID-protected flash and patent-pending input-output systems and claims cost parity with hard drives along with roughly 10x better performance. Violin launched its first generation in 2009 and has more than 100 employees; customers include AOL, Microsoft and Hewlett‑Packard. Management said it was looking at a record year in 2011 and positions the product as increasingly relevant as computing shifts to the cloud. Financially, the company has raised $110 million since its 2005 founding and just completed a $35 million second round of funding.
