Overview

Visualead develops ‘visual QR codes’ that blend into images, animations, and videos so they look like part of a design rather than standard black-and-white codes. The company says roughly 500,000 businesses in 200 countries use its technology for offline-to-online mobile marketing and claims consumers are up to four times more likely to scan its codes versus ordinary QR codes. Visualead launched in early 2013 and positions its product to differentiate from competitors by improving scan rates and visual appeal. China has been a key market and partners include social network Renren. The company intends to use new funding to further develop its offline-to-online technology and expand integration across mobile and video channels. A strategic partnership with Alibaba includes collaboration on mobile, video, and anti-counterfeiting technology. Visualead embeds QR codes into images so the codes look like promotional art rather than standard dot-matrix patterns. The company launched a self-serve platform in January targeting small and medium businesses and also licenses its technology to large brands and enterprises. Its platform is used by 200,000 SMBs, which create 30,000 campaigns every month. Founder and CEO Nevo Alva said the company expects to reach creation of 1 million Visual QR Codes per month within six months. Financially, Visualead recently raised a $1.6M Series A and has now raised a total of $2.35M to date. While the SMB side is growing more quickly, the company sees its biggest opportunity at the enterprise level.
