Overview

ViVOtech builds NFC payment software, contactless readers/writers, smart posters, and transaction-management infrastructure that enable short-range mobile payments. Its readers are deployed at major retailers including McDonald’s, Home Depot and Whole Foods and in taxi cabs. The company has shipped nearly one million NFC payment readers to 328 U.S. customers and 181 international customers and says it has shipped over half of the NFC payment terminals installed by merchants globally. Its technology is licensed by other companies and was used in Google Wallet’s NFC rollout; ViVOtech also teamed with the carrier joint venture Isis. The company reported sales in the “double-digit millions” as of last year. While ViVOtech says it stands to benefit from NFC growth, the broader consumer adoption of NFC payments remains uncertain. ViVOtech develops NFC payment software and systems, including payment software, NFC smart posters, contactless readers/writers, over‑the‑air card provisioning and transaction management infrastructure. The company has installed more than 800,000 NFC systems in 35 countries and its readers are deployed at retailers including McDonald's, Home Depot and Whole Foods as well as in taxi cabs. Its technology is frequently licensed by other companies and merchants to enable mobile payments, and Google used ViVOtech's technology for Google Wallet. For merchants that want to accept Google Wallet payments, ViVOtech provides NFC point‑of‑sale readers and has worked with Google, merchants and POS software vendors to integrate NFC readers with existing POS software. Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported the company has 80% of the U.S. market for NFC readers and sales in "double‑digit millions." ViVOtech says the new funds will be used for further international expansion in Asia and other markets, and the company has reportedly been looking at an IPO in 2012. VivoTech builds infrastructure for wireless credit-card transactions, enabling payments via radio-frequency credit and debit cards and some mobile phones. The company has sold 470,000 payment terminals across 35 countries. It is developing systems to enable the same wireless payments in taxis, vending machines and ATMs. VivoTech is based in Santa Clara, Calif. Financially, the company added $8.6 million to a third round of funding that is now $40 million and has been open since 2007. Previously the company had raised $52 million; its backers include Alloy Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DFJ Gotham, First Data, Miven Ventures, NCR, Nokia Growth Partners, Motorola Ventures and Citigroup.
