Withings

2 rue Maurice Hartmann, Issy-les-Moulineaux, 92130, France

Overview

Withings develops a portfolio of connected medical devices—smart scales, blood pressure monitors, watches, sleep analyzers, and urine analyzers—that measure over 50 clinically validated cardiometabolic biomarkers in noninvasive, home settings. The company combines this device ecosystem with AI to enable scalable, proactive care tailored to individual health profiles. Withings announced Project DEEP, a multi‑year R&D initiative aimed at advancing early detection and prevention of cardiometabolic diseases through AI and novel noninvasive medical devices. The effort is backed by a €20.7 million investment and support from the French government via the France 2030 initiative. Withings operates entirely French‑based R&D, has supported 128 clinical studies, collected over 12 billion health measurements, and serves about 10 million users. The company says Project DEEP will enhance existing products and develop new medical-device solutions to improve outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Withings develops medical‑grade consumer health devices and software that deliver clinical-quality data for use by healthcare professionals, payers, researchers and employers. After being re-acquired from Nokia in 2018 by a group including its original founders and some original investors, the company pivoted to focus exclusively on medical-grade products and B2B programs. Its product portfolio includes smart blood pressure monitors, body-fat–measuring scales, contactless thermometers and other at-home monitoring devices designed to meet medical device regulatory standards. Withings formed a MED PRO division last year to place devices in programs and deployments managed by hospitals, insurers, pharma, researchers and other medical professionals. Demand for remote monitoring has accelerated amid COVID‑19, including requests for diabetes prevention, hypertension programs and employer back-to-work packages. The company has a Medical Advisory Board and in-house clinicians, a psychologist and a physicist involved in product design to support its clinical and enterprise ambitions. Withings builds consumer health gadgets, notably smart scales and body analyzers, and has produced one‑off devices such as a baby monitor. The company recently introduced the Pulse wearable, which measures heart rate with a touch and tracks steps and sleep to augment data for owners of other Withings products. The $99 Pulse is positioned to act as an on‑ramp to Withings’ broader health ecosystem. With the new $30 million financing, Withings plans to expand into new markets, increase R&D headcount, and improve retail distribution to better showcase its products. The company previously raised $3.85 million (€3 million) in 2010. Withings is Paris‑based and was founded in 2008. Withings is a Paris-based startup best known for its tweeting Wi‑Fi body scale, a connected device that tracks weight, recognizes up to eight users, and transfers data to computers, iPhones, or iPads. The scale launched officially on June 25 of last year and retails for €129 in France. The 20-person company distributes its product across several continents, with roughly 40% of sales in the U.S., 40% in Europe, and the remaining 20% elsewhere. Withings has a partner in Japan and plans to expand distribution in Asia, targeting Korea and Taiwan in particular. The startup raised €3 million from French VC Ventech in its first round of funding; the capital will be used primarily to develop two new products due within six months. The team is not disclosing cumulative unit sales, and it says one upcoming product will likely be health-related while the other will target more casual, everyday use.
