Wordnik, launched in 2008 and based in San Mateo, CA, operates a word navigation system that offers consumers more meaning and deeper context around words. Its technology provides additional access to content and context from a wide range of sources, including dictionaries, users, Twitter and Flickr. The team is led by founder Erin McKean and CEO Joe Hyrkin and includes experts in search engine architecture, social networking, computational linguistics and lexicography. In July 2011 Wordnik raised $8M in a Series C round, bringing total funding to date to $12.8M. The company said it will use the proceeds to build out a range of new product and service offerings. Bradley Horowitz, Vice President of Product Management for Google, joined the company’s board as part of the round.
