World View develops high-altitude stratospheric flight systems and remote sensing platforms (Stratollite) for exploration, ISR, and commercial imaging. The company is optimizing and refining its stratospheric flight capabilities while increasing production capacity of its maturing remote sensing platforms. Its roadmap includes research and engineering missions and future ambitions around space tourism and exploration. World View has completed more than 120 stratospheric flight operations, including flights carrying up to 4,700kg and 10,000kg payloads, and serves customers such as NASA, NOAA and U.S. Department of Defense units. The recently opened Series D funding supports scaling operations to meet growing demand for high-altitude ISR from U.S. defense customers and commercial remote sensing markets. Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, World View plans a robust flight manifest over the next 24 months to further develop and improve its flight systems and capabilities. World View develops high-altitude stratollite balloon platforms to carry communications, imaging, science and other payloads for extended periods in the stratosphere. The company has been testing stratollite technology for several years, performing flights of increasing duration and maintaining a growing flight manifest. World View originally pursued crewed tourism with a vehicle called Voyager but has deferred those plans to focus on uncrewed stratollite commercialization. Management says the new funding will accelerate development of the uncrewed Stratollite as a commercially viable, long-duration flight platform. The company operates a headquarters and test facility in Tucson, Arizona; that facility suffered about $200,000 in damage during a December test incident that was covered by insurance. World View has added industry leadership as Tom Ingersoll joined as executive chairman and Accel partner Sameer Gandhi will join the company board. World View is an advanced high-altitude balloon company developing the Stratollite platform alongside a tourism product called the World View Experience. Its core product, the Stratollite, is designed to loiter over specific locations for extended periods, support payload retrieval, and serve research, remote sensing, weather-data collection, and emergency communications. The company has flown over 50 short-duration Stratollite flights for customers including NASA and Northrop Grumman and plans to release a new series of models later this year that can perform long-endurance flights and circumnavigate the globe. Short-duration Stratollite flights can reach about 140,000 feet with a 1,000-pound payload capacity, while long-endurance flights are expected to carry around 200 pounds to about 80,000 feet for missions lasting months. World View selected Arizona for its new headquarters and a "spaceport" launch facility and will develop its Voyager tourism system in parallel, leveraging shared technologies. Financially, the company has raised a $15 million Series B and previously raised $7.1 million; the new capital will be used to accelerate Stratollite development and commercial adoption.
