Yplasma makes plasma actuators—thin copper strips driven with electrical current that create charged-particle clouds to induce airflow without moving parts. The actuators are low‑power (about 1 watt to match the cooling of a small fan) and are cheap and flexible, enabling integration into space‑constrained electronics. The company has shifted focus toward chip and data‑center cooling after a successful project with a major semiconductor manufacturer, while still developing wind‑turbine products and planning a Sandia National Laboratory test. Other potential applications cited include vehicle aerodynamics, satellite propulsion, aircraft deicing, and water harvesting. Yplasma was spun out of Spain’s space agency, INTA, and will run R&D out of SOSV’s Hax lab space in Newark alongside offices in Madrid. The startup recently raised a $2.5 million seed to refine its actuators and support development.
