Zapp
1st Floor One Suffolk Way, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN13 1YL, United Kingdom
Overview
Zapp launched in 2020 in London and runs an instant grocery delivery service built around smaller 'Zappstores' plus a large distribution centre. It offers a curated assortment—deep in some categories (50 ice-cream varieties; 21 tequila brands) and narrow in others—and connects directly with brands rather than relying solely on wholesalers. Zapp is live in London, Manchester, Cambridge, Bristol, Amsterdam and Rotterdam and is running a soft launch in Paris; it plans to beef up its home-market presence and expand into additional 'mega cities'. The company says its average order is in the mid-£20 range and that roughly two-thirds of Zapp’s orders are profitable. Zapp emphasizes customer experience over repeat discounting and voucher-led acquisition strategies used by some rivals. Financially, the company completed a $200M Series B and has now raised $300M in total. Zapp operates a vertical "dark store" model, running its own micro-fulfillment centers to offer on-demand delivery of convenience and impulse items. The startup emphasizes sustainability, employs its riders directly (not gig workers) and uses an all-electric fleet. It currently has multiple London locations including Kensington, Chelsea, Fulham, Notting Hill, Hammersmith, Shepherd’s Bush, Shoreditch, Islington and Angel. Zapp appears to focus less on fresh groceries and more on convenience offerings similar to goPuff. The founding team launched last summer and includes Joe Falter and Navid Hadzaad, alongside hires from Deliveroo, Just Eat, Domino’s and Tesco. The company says it is "excited to bring Zapp to millions of customers in London and beyond this year." Financially, Zapp has raised around $100 million in total to date, including an earlier seed round.
