ZeroDeposit is a start-up building an alternative to traditional cash tenancy deposits and the government‑approved tenancy deposit schemes. Tenants pay a non‑refundable sum equivalent to a week’s rent instead of a cash deposit, with an insurance policy that runs for the term of the tenancy and a £25 annual administration fee thereafter. The scheme routes disputes to an independent adjudicator and, if the adjudicator rules for the landlord, monies are passed to the landlord; ZeroDeposit also plans to pay agents referral fees. The company has formed a partnership with insurer Munich Re and secured commercial ties with ZPG, and currently operates a holding page inviting tenants to register interest ahead of a launch expected later in 2017. Management includes founder Jon Notley alongside Simon Embley, Gavin Wiseman and Ben Austin. Financially, ZeroDeposit has received multiple investment rounds totalling £5m to date, including an initial £250,000 investment from ZPG.
