ZetrOZ develops miniature wearable ultrasound devices, including sam® (sustained acoustic medicine) and UltrOZ®, for accelerated recovery and pain management. The sam® device targets non-pharmaceutical, bio-regenerative alternatives within the roughly $62 billion U.S. pain management market. Early adopters of sam® include physical therapists, athletic trainers and athletes using it for overuse injuries such as tendonopathies and muscle strains. UltrOZ™ Elite with OZ Inside™ launched in mid-2011 for equestrian rehabilitation to treat common musculoskeletal conditions in horses. The company is led by co-founder and CEO Bryant Guffey and Chief Scientific and Technology Officer Dr. George K. Lewis. ZetrOZ received a $5M venture loan facility which it plans to use to expand marketing and sales of its wearable ultrasound products beyond the professional market and into the consumer arena. ZetrOZ develops Sam, an iPod-sized wearable that delivers ultrasound therapy through a patch to treat musculoskeletal and joint pain and to improve circulation. Sam is designed to be worn for four hours at a time and is described by the company as a sustained acoustic medicine device. The company secured FDA 510(k) clearance for Sam a few months before the raise. ZetrOZ has raised a little more than $2 million from angel groups and private investors, according to a Form D filed with the SEC. Named backers include Connecticut Innovations, Standard Oil Ventures, Angel Investor Forum, Mass Medical Angels, Boston Harbor Angels and Launchpad Venture Group. The funds are likely to be used to support sales, marketing and manufacturing, and the company says it will focus on educating the medical community and patients about its drug-free pain solution. The company was started by a pair of Cornell grads; co-founders include CEO Brant Guffey, CSO George Lewis and COO JoAnne Guarino. Prior to Sam, ZetrOZ launched an ultrasound therapy product for horses called UltrOZ in 2011. ZetrOZ has developed a small portable/wearable ultrasound system designed to treat pain in humans and animals. The patent-pending device delivers low-intensity, long-duration ultrasound therapy and is intended for use while patients sleep, move, or receive care in a doctor’s or physical therapist’s office. The system consists of a battery pack, transducers that provide the therapy, and disposable hydrogel patches that attach the transducers to the patient’s body. The product will be available for purchase by doctors and physical therapists and for patients to self-administer therapy. The company also markets UltrOZ, a system for the equine market designed to treat pain and reduce the need for invasive therapies. ZetrOZ is based in Trumbull, Connecticut and currently has a staff of 12.
