Qool Therapeutics is developing a non-invasive targeted temperature management system comprised of a control unit and a delivery tube that delivers micron-sized frozen saline particles to the lungs to cool the heart, brain, and other central organs. The system leverages the lungs’ large surface area and direct blood flow to enable rapid systemic cooling and enhanced delivery of drugs or biologics to the airways. The company positions the technology for indications including cardiac arrest, stroke, traumatic brain injury, myocardial infarction, sepsis, heat stroke, and as a protective adjunct for vascular surgery, among others. Qool says its device is designed to be non-invasive, rapid, and compatible with the flow of patient care. The company will use new funding to complete product development and prepare for first-in-human clinical trials. Qool is based in the Menlo Park/Silicon Valley area, holds a broad patent portfolio (21 allowed/issued and 15 pending U.S. and international patents), and received an award from the Defense Innovation Unit Experimental (DIUx). The company aims to provide a direct path to local organ cooling with a device described as rapid and field deployable. Qool was founded by inventor Amir Belson, MD and is led by CEO Beverly Huss. The company closed a seed funding round of undisclosed amount with participation from an angelMD syndicate led by orthopedic surgeon Michael Dillingham. While completing the seed round Qool is conducting early animal studies and has launched a Series A1 financing round.
