ZuriMed Technologies is a medtech company spun out of the Institute for Biomechanics at ETH Zurich that develops smart solutions for novel treatments in sports medicine. Its core product is the Surgical-Fiberlock technology, a novel approach designed to let surgeons attach patches and sutures more easily and more reliably for soft-tissue repair. The technology is targeted at orthopaedics (initially shoulder rotator cuff repair) and has shown potential for other indications such as minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery. With CHF 14.5 million in Series A funding and an additional CHF 2.4 million Innosuisse Swiss Accelerator Grant of non-diluting funding, ZuriMed will accelerate product development and regulatory registration. The company plans regulatory registration of its first product for rotator cuff repair and to develop a second device aimed at minimally invasive repair of herniated lumbar discs. ZuriMed aims to pursue market uptake across the United States and Europe within the next three years. ZuriMED is a clinical spin-off of Universitätsklinik Balgrist developing the BTB-Conversion-Kit, a new implant intended to change conventional surgical treatment for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. The BTB-Conversion-Kit uses a combination of advanced biomaterials to accelerate graft integration, enable better tissue ingrowth, and reduce rehabilitation time. The design aims to combine the advantages of existing surgical methods while eliminating their common drawbacks. To pursue market approval the team secured a CHF 1.5 million financing round and earlier received CHF 130,000 from Venture Kick. Venture Kick’s support aided the startup’s early development and provided access to a mentor through its network. CEO Dr. Xiang Li, who was part of the Swiss Startup National Team presenting projects in Boston and New York, leads the company addressing a sizable clinical need in Switzerland where more than 6,000 ACL injuries occur annually.
