  • Thrive Earlier Detection

    Participated · Series A · May 2019

Thrive Earlier Detection is developing CancerSEEK, a liquid biopsy blood test intended to detect many cancers at earlier stages of disease. The company aims to incorporate CancerSEEK into routine medical care and, used alongside standard-of-care screening, shift diagnoses to earlier, potentially curable stages. In April, Thrive published data from the first prospective, interventional study of a multi-cancer screening test in an asymptomatic population, and company statements reference a real-world study of 10,000 individuals showing the test more than doubled cancers first detected by screening. Thrive says it will continue to work with stakeholders to remove barriers to timely access, including pursuing future reimbursement. The recent financing provides capital to advance CancerSEEK into a registrational trial. Overall, Thrive’s stated mission is to extend and save lives by making earlier cancer detection a routine part of care. Thrive Earlier Detection is building CancerSEEK, a liquid‑biopsy blood test designed to detect multiple cancer types at earlier stages and to be administered during routine medical care. CancerSEEK interrogates circulating tumor DNA mutations and cancer‑associated protein markers; in a retrospective study published in Science it demonstrated greater than 99% specificity and sensitivities of 69%–98% for five cancers that lack screening tests. Thrive holds an exclusive license to CancerSEEK from Johns Hopkins and the technology was pioneered by Bert Vogelstein, Kenneth Kinzler and Nickolas Papadopoulos. The company plans to integrate real‑world data and machine learning and to offer an integrated service for result interpretation, confirmatory diagnostics and clinical care guidance to embed the test in primary care workflows. Thrive has received FDA Breakthrough Device designation for pancreatic and ovarian cancer detection and is conducting the DETECT prospective study (10,000 enrolled to date in the specified cohort) with Johns Hopkins and Geisinger to generate evidence for regulatory approvals, guideline inclusion and reimbursement. The company launched in 2019 and recently closed a $110M Series A to advance commercialization and additional clinical studies.
