Applied Nano Surfaces has developed a surface treatment technology that produces thin nano-composite coatings delivering extremely low friction and durable anti-wear properties for steel and cast iron components. The method, based on research carried out at Uppsala University between 2000 and 2006, enables manufacturers to cost‑efficiently create coatings to improve energy efficiency in applications where friction-related losses are significant, such as internal combustion engines, bearings, compressors and pumps. The company was founded in 2008 and is led by CEO Mattias Karls, and is based in Uppsala, Sweden. In December 2010 it completed a €1.3m fundraising and also secured a term loan from the Swedish Energy Agency. The round was led by new investor Fouriertransform AB, with participation from existing investors the Sixth AP Fund, Första Entreprenörsfonden and Attentus Göteborg. Applied Nano Surfaces intends to use the capital to continue expansion into new markets and into more application areas.
