Led by CEO Chris Kirby, the company has created lubricant-free magnetic transmissions and magnetically geared motors that offer new engineering possibilities. Its products target applications including wind turbines, hybrid vehicles, marine propulsion, and broader sectors such as renewable energy, automotive, aerospace and defence. The company spun out of the University of Sheffield in 2006 and is based in Sheffield, UK. It is using the new funding to complete development of its magnetically geared motors for the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

MedaPhor is a Cardiff e-learning firm led by CEO Stuart Gall that produces training products for postgraduate medical professionals. Its flagship ScanTrainer is a virtual “real feel” ultrasound-training simulator that provides a 24/7, educationally driven programme replicating real ultrasound scanning. The company raised £1.06m in equity funding to support growth. Backers include Fusion IP, Finance Wales and IP Group; Finance Wales converted existing loan notes as part of the deal. MedaPhor plans to use the capital to expand US and European sales and to accelerate development of the ScanTrainer range into general medical training. The company focuses on advanced tutorials and simulation tools to improve ultrasound examination technique. MedaPhor is an e-learning company that produces training products for postgraduate medical professionals and is developing the ScanTrainerTM, a virtual-reality ultrasound training device. The ScanTrainerTM combines high-quality ultrasound images with computer-based feedback and training to address limited equipment, trainers and volunteers. The product can be applied across multiple therapeutic areas and will initially target the Obstetrics and Gynaecology market. The funds raised will enable completion of the ScanTrainerTM prototype and move it into commercialisation. A product launch is planned for the first half of 2010. Following the round, investor Fusion IP owns 36.7% of the company, and management expects a further fundraising round will be needed to finance the launch.

Nanotether Discovery Services is a Cardiff, UK–based pharmaceutical research technology company that develops high-throughput quantitative binding assays for the protein interaction market. Its technology is based on inventions by Professors Trevor Dale, Adrian Harwood and Paola Borri from the Cardiff University School of Biosciences. The company has raised up to £2.2m in funding to be made available in three tranches, with an initial £850k due immediately. The round was led by Andrew Black and included participation from Fusion IP, which holds a 21% shareholding. Nanotether intends to use the funds for technology development over the next 27 months.

Phase Focus is a Sheffield, UK-based developer and supplier of nanotech imaging and microscopy technology. It has developed the Phase Focus Virtual Lens®, which transfers the task of image creation from a lens to a computer programme and can be integrated into existing microscopes or underpin next-generation microscopy products. The Virtual Lens is already used in applications such as commercial contact lens measurement and laboratory-based cell analysis. Led by CEO Dr. Ian Pykett, the company intends to use the newly raised funds to increase adoption of its technology. Phase Focus recently completed a £3.2m equity raise to support commercialisation and broader deployment. The round strengthens the company’s financial position to drive uptake of its Virtual Lens technology.

Zilico is a Manchester-based developer of ZedScan™, a cervical cancer diagnostic system built on the company’s patented Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) technology. ZedScan is currently in routine use across a number of UK hospitals and has supported service evaluations in France, the Netherlands, Poland and Finland. The EIS platform is positioned as applicable to a wide range of neoplastic conditions, forming the core of Zilico’s product portfolio. The company intends to use newly raised funds to continue global expansion of ZedScan across the UK, Europe and China and to take the product through regulatory trials in the US. Following the deal, partner MaxHealth Medicine Group will lead ZedScan’s registration with the Chinese Food & Drug Administration. Zilico is led by CEO Sameer Kothari and will deploy the financing to support expansion and regulatory activities. Zilico develops a portable, hand-held system that provides near real-time results for women undergoing Pap smear and LBC tests, using a single-use disposable sleeve and docking station. The technology, electrical impedance spectroscopy, measures cell resistivity to detect progression from normal to precancerous and cancerous states. The company plans to complete manufacture of commercial devices and use the recent funding to expand into the EU and other territories. Zilico was founded in 2006 as a spin-out from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and is based in Sheffield, UK. The company positions its first application within the referral population to help reduce biopsies, while a second application under development targets screening to reduce subjectivity and time with current tests. It recently received a £985K funding injection to support these commercial and expansion plans.
