  • Mission Motors

    Participated · Series B · Aug 2011

Mission Motors is a San Francisco-based developer of electric vehicle technology that provides energy storage, drive systems, software intelligence and system integration. The company is led by CEO Jit Bhattacharya and serves vehicle manufacturers, tier-one suppliers and fleet managers. Mission closed a $9.0m Series B financing to fund commercialization of its electric powertrain technologies. The round was led by Warburg Pincus, with participation from Infield Capital; Warburg made an initial $7.5m investment and holds the right to make additional injections up to a total of $50m at its discretion. This Series B brings Mission’s total funding to date to $15.0m. The company intends to use the proceeds to commercialize its powertrain technologies and expand partnerships with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

  • Pinnacle Engines

    Participated · Equity · Mar 2011

Pinnacle Engines, based in San Carlos, CA, closed a Series C financing bringing total investment in the company to more than $30m. Investors in the round included Mitsui Global Investment, VenturEast and a strategic OEM partner alongside existing backers Bessemer Venture Partners, New Enterprise Associates and Infield Capital. The company previously raised $13.5M in 2011. Pinnacle develops a four-stroke internal combustion engine architecture that uses standard components and manufacturing techniques aimed at the lowest total cost. Its technology is presented as having the potential to reduce petroleum usage and greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. The company’s first commercial engine, jointly developed with its charter OEM partner, is expected to launch soon in Asia, and Pinnacle has formed an Asian Business Advisory Board of five industry leaders to advise the executive team. Pinnacle Engines designs an ultra-efficient internal combustion engine based on a four-stroke, spark-ignited opposed-piston, sleeve-valve architecture. The company says the design delivers 30–50% better fuel economy across various drive cycles without the cost penalty typically associated with such improvements. In conjunction with the funding announcement it unveiled plans to commercialize the engine by 2013 and is commercializing the technology through a joint development and licensing agreement with an Asian vehicle OEM. Production is expected to start in the first quarter of 2013, and the company said additional developments and plans for global automotive expansion will be revealed later in the year. Pinnacle raised $13.5 million in venture funding and is led by Chairman and CEO Ron Hoge. The company is based in San Carlos, California.
