  • Enevate

    Participated · Series E · Feb 2021

Enevate develops and licenses advanced silicon-dominant Li-ion battery technology that delivers extreme fast charging and high energy density for electric vehicles and other markets. The company markets a technology it says enables five-minute extreme fast charging, low-temperature operation, lower cost and safety advantages versus conventional batteries, and supports pouch and cylindrical cell formats. Its business model focuses on technology transfer and intellectual property licensing to automotive OEMs and EV battery manufacturers, enabling use of existing manufacturing infrastructure with minimal additional investment. Enevate holds a portfolio of more than 350 patents issued and pending and states its patents cover jurisdictions representing over 95% of EV sales worldwide, claiming the largest patent portfolio among silicon Li-ion startups. The Irvine, California–based company works with multiple OEMs and battery manufacturers and plans to expand a pre-production line to guide customers toward larger-scale manufacturing. It intends to use new funding to hire additional scientists and engineers and to scale commercialization. With the latest round, Enevate has raised $191 million to date. Enevate develops and licenses silicon-dominant Li-ion battery technology (HD-Energy®) that delivers extreme-fast charging—about five-minute charge times—alongside high energy density, strong low-temperature performance, lower cost, and safety advantages. The company licenses its HD-Energy technology to battery and EV automotive manufacturers and suppliers worldwide to accelerate production volume and adoption. Enevate emphasizes low-temperature operation for cold climates, long driving range, and rapid charging as core product benefits. Leadership projects a future where EV drivers can use drive-thru style charging stations and be back on the road in roughly five minutes. Enevate is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and lists a group of strategic investors backing its technology. Bangchak, through its Bangchak Initiative and Innovation Center (BiiC), has recently invested in the company; the investment amount was not disclosed. Enevate Corporation, headquartered in California, develops and licenses silicon-dominant lithium-ion battery technology aimed at accelerating EV adoption. Its HD-Energy technology enables extreme fast charging, allowing cells to reach 75% capacity in five minutes while delivering higher energy density than many current long-range EV batteries. The technology also supports safe charging and discharging down to -40°C and captures more energy during regenerative braking, improving range in cold climates. Enevate offers a complete HD-Energy technology and licensing package to enable global EV automakers and battery manufacturers to reach production volumes and adopt next-generation features. The company announced that LG Chem participated in its recent funding, and its investor roster includes Mission Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Tsing Capital, Samsung, Lenovo, and others. Enevate plans to commercialize its technology through strategic partnerships with manufacturers and licensors to accelerate deployment worldwide. Enevate develops advanced Li‑ion batteries built on its HD‑Energy Technology, which uses silicon‑dominant composite anodes and novel cell designs. The company says this approach increases volumetric and gravimetric energy density by 25–50% versus conventional graphite anode cells. Its batteries enable thinner, lighter form factors for smartphones, tablets, ultra‑thin notebook PCs and drones with longer runtimes. Enevate characterizes the technology as representing over a decade of advancement relative to current Li‑ion improvement rates. The company is headquartered in Irvine, California, and lists investors including Mission Ventures, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Tsing Capital, Infinite Potential Technologies, Presidio Ventures and CEC Capital. Management plans to use new funding to move products developed for its first strategic investors and customers into high‑volume mass production and to expand into applications such as drones. Enevate Corporation is an Irvine, California–based developer of advanced rechargeable lithium‑ion (Li‑ion) batteries. The company focuses on next‑generation Li‑ion batteries for smartphones, tablets, and ultra‑thin notebook PCs. Its HD‑Energy Technology utilizes silicon composite anodes in rechargeable Li‑ion polymer batteries to increase energy density over conventional graphite anode cells. Led by CEO Brian Wong, Enevate completed a $24M Series B financing. Backers include new investors CEC Capital, Tsing Capital, Presidio Ventures (a Sumitomo Corporation company), other strategic investors, and existing investors Mission Ventures and Draper Fisher Jurvetson. The company intends to use the funding to bring its first products to market.

  • League

    Participated · Seed · Nov 2014

League provides a platform-as-a-service called Health OS that enables providers, payers, consumer-health partners and employers to build personalized, high-engagement healthcare experiences. The platform is built on the FHIR standard and leverages Google Cloud Platform’s Healthcare API to integrate EHRs, claims, health and wellness devices, and third-party partners. Hundreds of customers, including Humana, Shopify and Shoppers Drug Mart, use League’s technology, and millions of people access solutions powered by the platform. League plans to use new financing to scale Health OS as the digital infrastructure for an integrated health ecosystem and to accelerate interoperability and time-to-market for partners. The company has raised over $205 million to date. League was founded in 2014 and operates from Toronto and Chicago. League is a Toronto-based cloud-based digital employee health benefits platform that connects businesses and their employees with health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health content, curated health journeys and on-demand live health support. Founded in November 2014 by Mike Serbinis (founder and CEO) and Brian Ancell (U.S. president), the company launched in the U.S. market in 2017 and is licensed to operate in all 50 states. In 2018 League raised C$62M in funding led by Telus Ventures with participation from Wittington Ventures and existing backers OMERS, Infinite Potential Group, RBC Ventures, Real Ventures and BDC Ventures. The company intends to use the proceeds to scale internationally, opening new offices in San Francisco, New York and London to bring its platform to employers globally. It also plans to continue investing in its member experience. League intends to begin operations in the UK and EU in 2019. LEAGUE offers a mobile-first benefits platform that lets employees customize health coverage via a LEAGUE wallet usable inside and outside employers' preferred provider networks. The platform streamlines enrollment, reducing paperwork and HR burden, and employers pay a monthly fee on top of their health plan for access to LEAGUE's services. Users can opt into services ranging from regular check-ups to preventative care and wellness benefits, and new plan options can be added at any time. Since 2014 the company has onboarded just under 500 companies, and employers can already sign up in Toronto, Seattle, Los Angeles and Vancouver. Service offerings are expected to grow across the United States over the next 24–36 months due to heterogeneity in state healthcare procedures. LEAGUE emphasizes preventative care and positions itself between consumer health insurers like Oscar and large enterprise solutions such as Collective Health. League is a digital health and wellness platform that helps members discover, schedule, and pay for health services and assemble a 'league' of health professionals who coordinate personalized programs. The platform stores health information, including data from wearables and health applications, and lets members control and share that data with their league. Health professionals can use the service to connect with clients and deliver personalized care. League is creating a data-rich mobile platform with an initial focus on preventative health. It is accepting applications from health professionals and individuals for a beta program and plans to launch in early 2015. The company is led by CEO and founder Michael Serbinis and is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
