- Interset
Participated · Equity · Mar 2015
Interset develops a user behavior analytics (UBA) platform that uses machine learning and patented predictive analytics-based risk scoring to assign risk to accounts, machines, files, and digital assets. The platform automates sifting through billions of log files and terabytes of events to surface anomalous behaviors and convey them with actionable, contextual information. Interset emphasizes reducing noise and false positives and presenting analysts with inherently actionable notifications via an intuitive user interface that visually depicts threat stages. The solution uses agentless data collectors, lightweight endpoint sensors, and a scalable, extensible architecture. Interset reports deployments across manufacturing, life sciences, high-tech, finance, government, aerospace and defense, and securities brokerage industries. A strategic investment and technology development agreement with In-Q-Tel is intended to advance further development of the UBA platform. Interset's platform connects siloed data sources — application and OS logs, identity repositories, security tools and endpoints — to correlate millions of events and surface prioritized, actionable threats. Its patent-pending behavioral analytics engine applies multiple mathematical frameworks to identify threats from single or corroborating datasets, and the solution uses agentless collectors, lightweight endpoint sensors and an intuitive UI. Customers span manufacturing, defense, technology, energy, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, finance, government and securities brokerage; Surescripts is named as a customer using Interset to monitor data exits and reduce noise. The company emphasizes rapid detection of targeted insider and outsider attacks and is building new threat visualizations, including a multidimensional kill-chain view. Interset plans to expand platform capabilities, accelerate customer adoption and develop OEM partnerships, such as the recently announced source-code threat protection solution with Perforce Software. Leadership includes president and CEO Dale Quayle, previously CEO of Integrien (sold to VMware in 2010).
- RainStor
Led · Series B · Mar 2010
RainStor builds a NewSQL relational database that emphasizes heavy compression to handle very large datasets, claiming up to 40-fold reductions in storage and faster backups. The product was originally positioned for on-premise and cloud data-archiving use cases. In January the company released a version that runs natively on the Apache Hadoop stack (not a connector), enabling compressed data storage in Hadoop while allowing traditional SQL queries alongside map-reduce workflows. RainStor’s technology lets organizations avoid piping data back and forth between systems and preserves Hadoop for data scientists who still want map-reduce. The company was originally called Clearpace and has raised multiple venture rounds to date. Proceeds from the new financing will be used to expand engineering, sales, and marketing teams. RainStor provides infrastructure software for online information preservation. The company is based in San Francisco, CA and also operates offices in Gloucester, UK. RainStor secured $7.5m in a Series B funding round from Storm Ventures and Informatica. Existing investors Doughty Hanson Technology Ventures and The Dow Chemical Company also participated in the round. As part of the financing, Tim Danford, managing director at Storm Ventures, will join RainStor’s board of directors. The company said it will use the funds to expand into new markets, grow its partner base, and invest in product development and R&D.
