Solena Materials develops computationally designed proteins intended for use as textile fibres, leveraging an AI-driven protein design platform. The company, founded in 2022 as a spinout from Imperial College London, is working with The Protein Express on the EXPREST program to advance manufacturability at scale. Under EXPREST, Solena will focus on designing a high-performance spinnable protein while the partner advances industrial fermentation and scalable purification processes. The program includes generating LCA and TEA data and pursuing EU REACH regulatory alignment to support commercial readiness. Solena and its partner are initially targeting the performance and premium apparel markets, with potential applicability across the broader textile industry. The company’s current financing includes the €1.4 million awarded through the Eureka Eurostars programme for the EXPREST collaboration.
