Overview

Mustard Seed enables the creation and evolution of world-class businesses that generate positive and sustainable outcomes. They believe that solving big social and environmental problems drives commercial success in the long run. They seek scalable solutions to gaps currently left unfilled by government and industry in the areas of economic inclusion, education, environmental sustainability, health, and family and community. Mustard Seed invests in and incubates socially and environmentally impactful start-ups. They connect a dynamic and influential network of global members with exceptional entrepreneurial talent across the world. They also develop bespoke impact measurement frameworks and support established companies to align profit and impact through tailored strategies and effective deployment of their resources. Mustard Seed was co-founded by Alex Pitt and Henry Wigan, first classmates at the London School of Economics and later colleagues at Goldman Sachs. In 2013 Henry and Alex observed a rising appetite for socially-minded entrepreneurship among the world’s most talented graduates. They also observed a critical lack of capital to adequately meet this need. They started Mustard Seed to bridge the gap.

  • Tiney

    Led · Series A · May 2024

tiney operates a tech-enabled childcare service that recruits, trains and supports ‘micro-entrepreneurs’ to become registered home-based childminders. The company provides an app with tools for processing invoices, handling taxes, ensuring Ofsted compliance, plus marketing support, business advice, lesson plans and peer support. Parents use the app to book childcare, make payments, and monitor their child’s development. tiney’s community has over 1,000 childminders registered, hundreds more in training, and provides early years education to more than 5,400 children. The startup plans to use new funding to expand operations and development efforts across its network. Tiney operates a two-sided platform that recruits people interested in becoming childminders, provides free in-person and online training and ongoing professional development, and lists trained childminders for parents to discover and book. The company handles messaging, invoicing and administrative tasks for bookings and takes a 10 percent commission on jobs and contracts completed through its platform. Tiney aims to streamline a bureaucratic public registration process and replace handwritten journals with online progress tracking that parents and authorities can monitor. Only about 20 percent of applicants are accepted into Tiney’s training program today, and the company is onboarding roughly 25 new childminders per month. The typical Tiney minder is in their early thirties and the program attracts a diverse mix of BAME, immigrant and professional career-break participants. With new funding, Tiney plans to scale onboarding and grow its pool of trained childminders across the UK.
