ipadio offers a live phone-casting service that connects telephony to the web, allowing users to call in audio instead of using data through its iPhone or Android apps. The company has been gaining traction in business and enterprise use cases despite also offering a consumer service. It has developed products such as 'Voice Forms' and is working on high-definition live streaming of phone calls to the web. ipadio cites real-world use cases like call-ins from Egypt to illustrate its utility. Founded in 2009, the company plans to use new funding to expand the business and continue product development. Financially, ipadio is initially taking just over £700k of a £1m package, with the remainder available later in 2011. Ipadio provides a phonecasting service with live phonecasting and audio-to-text translation via SpinVox's API. It offers iPhone and Android clients, though some customers plan to use regular telephones to interface with the service. Virgin Media has adopted ipadio for an internal program called FieldTalk to deliver on-demand audio updates to its field installation and maintenance teams. FieldTalk will deliver updates to field workers' phones or the company intranet and supports two-way interaction via keypad input or phone-in audio responses. Ipadio began life as a wholly owned subsidiary of digital communications company Nemisys. Last month the company secured additional funding of up to £500,000 from Sussex Research Limited, the investment vehicle of London-based financier Stewart Newton.
