  • Oriient

    Participated · Series A · May 2022

Oriient builds a software-only indoor positioning platform that maps buildings using ordinary smartphones and infers location from compass and other phone sensors combined with the Earth’s magnetic field and AI. The company says its solution requires no dedicated hardware, beacons or Wi‑Fi and produces maps via proprietary algorithms after a smartphone-based mapping pass. Oriient powers the in-store navigation used by Instacart shoppers across hundreds of North American stores and has made its SDK available on Google Cloud Marketplace. The company has 35 employees and achieved technological breakthroughs in 2021 that it says accelerated adoption. Oriient plans to use new capital to scale coverage to “tens of thousands” of locations, open new verticals and expand its global sales team. Its commercial focus today is mostly on individual retail brands and malls, though it sees other use cases beyond retail. Oriient builds high-performance indoor GPS that leverages Earth’s magnetic field and users’ smartphones instead of beacons or WiFi. Its platform enables enterprise customers—retailers, airports, malls and wholesalers—to let customers and employees navigate large areas and locate items with pinpoint accuracy. The service requires no installation or hardware and includes features such as instant targeted promotions to help retailers upsell and recover lost sales. Oriient says it is already working with the world’s largest retailers and is scaling to deliver an in-store navigation experience similar to online search. The company focuses on the retail and smart buildings verticals and powers location-aware mobile apps in indoor environments. Financially, Oriient recently closed a $4M seed financing to support its growth.
