Overview
Northumberland Business Development Assistance is an innovative NGO that provides entrepreneurs with financing and strategy. They work to accelerate industry-led growth that strengthens Canada's sustainability, productivity, and overall competitiveness. NCFDC is governed by a volunteer board of directors (entrepreneurs-in-residence) and staffed with business professionals who deliver an array of entrepreneurial development and finance programs funded by FedDev Ontario and the Government of Canada. In addition, NCFDC manages an investment portfolio that drives business start-up and expansion, as well as a variety of innovative entrepreneurial development initiatives.

Financially, Leynek secured $25,000 in matching, performance-based seed funding from NCFDC's thriveFORWARD initiative with support from FedDev Ontario and the Government of Canada's Jobs and Growth Fund.

Linkitz builds modular wearable electronic toys composed of snap‑together electronic blocks that blink and buzz and whose behavior changes when rearranged, teaching programming through play. The product is explicitly designed to appeal to girls by combining socializing, accessorizing and technology. Founder Lyssa Neel, an MIT PhD, developed the idea inspired by her own daughters; co‑founders include Drew Macrae and Chris Wallace. The team won the 2014 N100 Startup Competition and received a $100,000 early‑stage investment from Northumberland CFDC to finalize, test and market the product. Linkitz is participating in a HAXLR8R program in Shenzhen to learn about product manufacturing and prepare for mass production. The company plans to set up headquarters in Coburg and is working with local engineers to develop prototypes for user testing.
