- Songclip (Audiobyte)
Participated · Series A · Dec 2018
Songclip offers an API that lets apps search for and share licensed short music clips and currently integrates with partners like PicsArt. The company licenses music and performs its own tagging and clipping while offering tools for labels to protect intellectual property and data on user interactions. Songclip combines human editors and technology to capture song nuances and associations. Co-founders Andy Blacker (CEO) and John vanSuchtelen (COO) say they aim to popularize the short audio clip as a media format across many apps rather than build a consumer brand. The team projects that music clips will become a ubiquitous app feature in the next nine to 12 months. Financially, Songclip announced an $11M new funding round and has now raised $23M in total. Audiobyte is the parent company of Gifnote, a music-messaging app and API that embeds licensed five- to fifteen-second 'Songbytes' into GIFs, photos, videos and text. The company has a patented technology platform, including a proprietary database and search engine of licensed Songbytes, and offers an iOS app and gifnote.com. Audiobyte has launched an API for social and digital platforms (currently available for Slack) and plans additional integrations. The company works directly with major labels, publishers, artist managers and reporting platforms to ensure licensing compliance and industry collaboration. Audiobyte completed a $6 million Series A to support engineering, search engine development, and continued deployment of its API. Gifnote has gained visibility—being named Apple’s 'App of the Day'—and recently added senior executives from J. Walter Thompson and Qello to its team.
