Adept Materials is commercializing a two‑material moisture‑management system and a paint-and-primer dehumidifying product line. Founder and CEO Derek Stein, a former Brown physics professor, designed a sponge layer that absorbs water vapor and an outward‑facing barrier that permits vapor flow while blocking air, functioning like a one‑way diode. The company’s near-term product is a bathroom primer (barrier) and super‑absorbent paint (sponge) that together reduce indoor humidity. In laboratory tests in a bathroom‑sized chamber, the paint kept humidity 14% lower than conventional paint. Adept plans to launch the paint and primer early next year while continuing development of a full water‑resistive building wrap designed to resemble existing weather‑resistive barriers to ease construction‑industry adoption. The startup recently raised funding to support commercialization and ongoing product development.
