Bio-Logical is a Nairobi, Kenya-based climate tech company led by Co-CEOs Rory Buckworth and Philip Hunter. It develops biochar-based carbon removals and fertiliser to help smallholder farmers regenerate land, increase crop yields and build climate resilience. The company aims to sequester 1 million tons of CO2 and support 1 million smallholder farmers by 2030. Bio-Logical raised $1.3M in funding to expand its Mt. Kenya biochar facility and scale carbon removal and fertiliser production capacity. The funding is intended to boost crop yields and climate resilience for thousands of smallholder farmers in Kenya. The round was led by CrossBoundary, Redshaw Advisors and existing investor the Steyn Group. Bio-Logical builds biochar production facilities that transform agricultural waste into biochar, sequestering CO2 and creating carbon credits. The company plans to develop its first Kenya site with the recent seed funding and then expand across the region to support 1 million smallholders and sequester 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030. Its initial facility is planned to process over 30,000 tonnes of agricultural waste per year and sequester about 25,000 tonnes of CO2. Revenue from generated carbon credits will be used to subsidise a resilience-building fertiliser for smallholder farmers, with the aim of boosting yields and reducing fertiliser costs. The company is led by CEO and co-founder Rory Buckworth. The seed financing will be deployed toward site development and regional expansion efforts.
