  • Gazelle Wind Power

    Participated · Equity · Nov 2024

Gazelle Wind Power is commercializing a patented floating offshore wind platform that combines unique hull geometry with a counterweight-based mooring system to reduce motion, minimize environmental impact, and lower levelized cost of energy (LCoE). The design is compact for assembly in shallow-draft ports, uses less steel, and targets industrial-scale rollout for turbines of 15MW and larger. Gazelle is advancing the Nau Azul demonstration project off the coast of Aguçadoura, Portugal, which has received a 10-year TUPEM authorization to enable deployment. The Nau Azul project will validate the platform under Portugal’s harsh offshore conditions and is intended to support large-scale commercial deployments across Iberia. The company has bases in Dublin and Viana do Castelo and maintains a presence in Vigo and London. Gazelle positions its solution to enable local content, utilize existing port infrastructure, and streamline transport, installation, and maintenance. Gazelle Wind Power develops next-generation floating platforms for offshore wind to make deep-water wind energy more viable, accessible and with less environmental impact on marine ecosystems. Its design targets lower costs, high stability, easy transport, installation and maintenance, and uses pre-existing port infrastructure and shipbuilding modular assembly to enable local content. The company is building the 'Nau Azul' demonstration pilot to validate the technology in real offshore conditions near Aguçadoura and Viana do Castelo. Founded in 2020 and based in Viana do Castelo, Gazelle says the platform is intended to reduce Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE) while mitigating impacts of traditional platforms. Recent funding will be used to strengthen Gazelle’s operational structure, expand its technical team and move ahead with construction of the pilot project. The company frames the pilot as a step toward a cost-competitive, scalable solution for larger deployments. Gazelle Wind Power is developing a modular, lightweight floating offshore wind platform designed to reduce costs and environmental impact. Its platform uses a patented dynamic mooring system to reduce pitch and balance movement without active ballasting. The design emphasizes modularity and shipyard-friendly fabrication with final assembly near wind farm sites to enable scalable deep-water deployment. Gazelle is advancing Nau Azul, a 2MW grid-connected demonstrator planned for Aguçadoura, Portugal, and has opened a local office in Viana do Castelo to support engineering and supply-chain activities. The company targets lower LCOE, easier installation and maintenance, and protection of marine ecosystems. Gazelle is based in Dublin and Viana do Castelo and has a presence in Vigo and London. Gazelle Wind Power designs and engineers a hybrid attenuated mooring floating platform that combines features of tension‑leg and semi‑submersible systems to enable deeper‑water offshore wind. The patented design claims a 70% reduction in steel weight, platform tilt under 1°, and roughly a 30% cost reduction versus other floating platforms. The company plans to use recent funding to develop its first grid‑connected demonstrator and accelerate platform development for the deep‑water offshore wind market. Gazelle says its platform overcomes buoyancy and geographic limitations while preserving fragile marine environments. Financially, Gazelle announced a $4 million financing package composed of seed and strategic long‑term funding to advance demonstration work. The company recently added an elite group of energy industry veterans to its board. Gazelle is based in Dublin and maintains a presence in Dubai, London, Madrid, and Paris.
