- Homeostasis
Participated · Seed · Mar 2025
Homeostasis develops a novel electrochemical process that converts CO2 into solid carbon materials, including graphite, using small, modular, portable reactors. The company produces carbon materials in the Pacific Northwest and conducts research through a partnership with the ASRC CAT program at City College of New York. Homeostasis also benefits from support at the University of Washington's Clean Energy Testbeds and backing from the Washington Department of Commerce. Led by co‑founders Dr. Julien Lombardi (Co‑Founder and Chief Science Officer) and Makoto Eyre (Co‑Founder and CEO), the startup plans to use recent funding to accelerate reactor development and make key technical hires in 2025. The company raised $600K in Pre‑Seed funding plus matching funds from the Washington Department of Commerce. Investors in the round included the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, Kayak Ventures and angel investors.
- BattGenie
Participated · Grant · Apr 2022
BattGenie develops software to improve lithium‑ion battery performance by optimizing fast recharging while extending battery life. The company says its technology has demonstrated battery cycle life improvements in excess of 100%, increased storage, and charge times as short as 15 minutes across EV, consumer and grid batteries. New capital will fund further tech development, new hires and commercialization, and a grant will support a project to repurpose retired electric bus batteries for the grid with a project site selected by Two Rivers CDC. BattGenie began work in 2013 and incorporated in 2017; its core technology originated in the lab of CTO Venkat Subramanian. The company has seven employees split between Seattle and Austin and previously participated in an accelerator led by Shell Global and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Past funding cited in the articles includes a $100,000 investment from Liquid 2 Ventures, a $5 million DOE grant, and roughly $75,000 in additional grants. BattGenie is a University of Washington spinoff that has developed software to improve performance of lithium batteries by optimizing fast recharging and extending battery life. The technology originated in the lab of CTO Venkat Subramanian and the company traces its start to a 2013 grant and incorporation in 2017. CEO Manan Pathak and CPO Chintan Pathak earned doctoral degrees from UW; the company has employees in Seattle and Austin. BattGenie says it serves large corporate customers in the U.S., Europe and Southeast Asia across electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and battery manufacturers. The startup was chosen for the Shell GameChanger Accelerator Powered by NREL, which provides $250,000 in non-dilutive funding. In addition to cash, the accelerator grants access to R&D resources at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy facility. BattGenie plans to use the funding to validate its technology at a full battery pack-level (a 400V system), which it says is critical for automotive applications.
