- Cosma
Led · Equity · Jun 2025
Cosma is a French deeptech company founded in 2022 that maps deep-sea ecosystems using swarms of autonomous underwater robots. Its systems collect up to 100,000 seabed images per hectare and combine 3D photogrammetry with AI algorithms to identify habitats and species and produce digital twins. The resulting data supports robust scientific studies and helps avoid sensitive species during offshore construction, protect underwater infrastructure, and better understand seagrass meadows' role in coastal erosion. Cosma was born within IFREMER and continues to be hosted in IFREMER’s underwater systems unit in La Seyne-sur-Mer, benefiting from the institute’s scientific and technical support. Early clients include RWE, EGIS, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and the French Navy. The company plans to industrialise its drone fleet, strengthen its software and AI analysis platform, and scale operations to serve public and private clients across Europe, supported by recent funding.
