Zell Founders Fund analyses and invests in exceptional student entrepreneurs whose business ventures require assistance in moving from idea to profitability. The Fund is intended for all University of Michigan students who are graduating or nearing the end of their undergraduate or graduate programme and are looking for money to assist a company that they want to continue after graduation. The amount of investment will be determined by the necessity and stage of the firm.

  • Mindwell

    Mindwell is an Ann Arbor, Michigan–based food company that makes high-protein plant-based jerky with no artificial flavors or ingredients. Founded in early 2017 by Allyson Stewart and Bridget Henley, the company sells its products in the Midwest at Plum Market, Dollop Coffee, and Chicago Equinox Wellness Grub cafes. Mindwell raised $100K in seed funding from the Zell Founders Fund, a student-led venture fund at the University of Michigan’s Zell Lurie Institute. The company intends to use the funds to expand the business through investments in working capital and marketing. Mindwell is growing and plans to launch in a large regional grocery chain in the fall.

    Sahi Cosmetics is an Ann Arbor, Mich.-based startup that produces luxury makeup tailored to women of medium skin tones. Led by CEO Shelly Sahi, a former makeup artist and materials engineer at Ford, the company targets women of Arabic, Indian, Pakistani, Mediterranean and Hispanic descent underserved by the current cosmetics industry. Its product line has grown from kitchen-counter prototypes to 49 items, including the Diamond Foundation launched in August. Products are sold directly on SAHI Cosmetics’ website and on Amazon.com. The company plans to use recent funding to create new marketing initiatives and bring new products to market. Earlier support includes $27k as the top winner at the Michigan Business Challenge and a $25k investment plus mentorship and services from the Desai Accelerator.
