Overview
1nhaler, headquartered in Edinburgh, is building a novel pop-up dry-powder inhaler (DPI) made predominantly from eco-friendly cardboard. The single-dose, disposable device folds from a credit-card shape into a three-dimensional inhaler through a patent-protected membrane system, tackling the cost, usability, and environmental drawbacks of traditional plastic inhalers. Performance data from its lead product matches leading multidose DPIs, and the platform can be tuned to deliver a range of dry-powder drugs for conditions such as asthma, COPD, influenza, and Parkinson’s. Recent funding will support the manufacture of clinical material, development of large-scale production processes, and preparation of a first Marketing Authorisation Application targeted for late 2027. The company has secured manufacturing partnerships with Upperton for clinical supply and Harro Höfliger for commercial scale-up. Founders Don Smith and Lisa McMyn have assembled an experienced leadership team, including former GSK and AstraZeneca executives, to steer the product toward commercialisation. 1nhaler is actively engaging potential pharmaceutical partners to bring both new and existing inhalable therapies to market more sustainably and cost-effectively.
