Overview

Originally formed in 1992 and based in Edinburgh, Archangels is a prominent business angel syndicate which has been at the forefront of early stage investing in Scotland for more than two decades. Today, Archangels comprises more than 60 investor members and typically co-ordinates the investment of more than £10 million per year in early stage Scottish companies. Their business ethos is underpinned by four fundamental pillars, which are to: - Give something back - Help young Scottish companies - Generate attractive investment returns, and - Have fun The Archangels syndicate predominantly invests in companies from the technology, software and life sciences sectors – three markets in which Scotland produces a wealth of talent. The syndicate and its executive team have wide experience in diverse business sectors and disciplines to help and support the creation and development of young companies to maximise investor return.

    Bioliberty develops Lifehub, an AI- and robotics-enabled platform that monitors functional recovery and enhances physical and occupational therapy delivery in post-acute settings. The company launched Lifehub Clinic in 2025 and is commercializing Lifehub in the U.S. while preparing Lifehub Home to extend therapy and monitoring into patients’ homes. Bioliberty reports growing adoption among major U.S. rehabilitation providers, including partnerships with one of the largest rehabilitation networks and Sheltering Arms Institute, and collaborates with research organizations such as Mount Sinai and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. It holds multiple patents across its core technologies and states that Lifehub and Lifeglov are FDA-registered. Founded in 2023, the company has raised $17.5 million to date and is using recent proceeds to expand computer vision, care coordination features, and U.S. commercialization efforts.

The company serves customers including global banks, consumer brands, energy companies and agribusinesses and works to integrate nature and climate insights into capital allocation and risk management. Founded in 2019 and based in Edinburgh, Earth Blox has run large-scale assessments such as a collaboration with Lloyds Banking Group that analysed 5.1 million hectares of farmland. The business recently appointed Ben Matthews as Director of Nature and Climate to expand its analytics capabilities. The company raised €6.9 million in the latest round to grow headcount, accelerate product development and expand platform capabilities. Archangels remains a backer alongside new lead PXN Ventures, Scottish Enterprise and funding from the European Space Agency.

    BioCaptiva, a University of Edinburgh spin-out, has created the msX magnetic bead platform, which extracts circulating cell-free DNA directly from whole blood without centrifugation or extra reagents. By delivering higher-quality DNA with simpler, faster, and fully automatable workflows, the technology tackles a long-standing bottleneck in liquid biopsy sample preparation, a rapidly expanding segment of non-invasive cancer testing. The company recently launched msX research-use-only kits in Boston to generate supporting data across multiple oncology applications. New Chief Technology Officer Alan Schafer, who previously held senior roles at Inivata, Population Genetics Technologies, 14M Genomics, and GSK, has been hired to drive product and technology development. The fresh capital will fund continued R&D and the expansion of BioCaptiva’s product portfolio and applications. Financially, the company secured £1.58 million in its latest round, led by existing backer Archangels alongside several institutional investors, demonstrating ongoing investor confidence as BioCaptiva enters a key commercialization phase.

    1nhaler, headquartered in Edinburgh, is building a novel pop-up dry-powder inhaler (DPI) made predominantly from eco-friendly cardboard. The single-dose, disposable device folds from a credit-card shape into a three-dimensional inhaler through a patent-protected membrane system, tackling the cost, usability, and environmental drawbacks of traditional plastic inhalers. Performance data from its lead product matches leading multidose DPIs, and the platform can be tuned to deliver a range of dry-powder drugs for conditions such as asthma, COPD, influenza, and Parkinson’s. Recent funding will support the manufacture of clinical material, development of large-scale production processes, and preparation of a first Marketing Authorisation Application targeted for late 2027. The company has secured manufacturing partnerships with Upperton for clinical supply and Harro Höfliger for commercial scale-up. Founders Don Smith and Lisa McMyn have assembled an experienced leadership team, including former GSK and AstraZeneca executives, to steer the product toward commercialisation. 1nhaler is actively engaging potential pharmaceutical partners to bring both new and existing inhalable therapies to market more sustainably and cost-effectively.

    CSignum develops patented EM-2 systems that use electromagnetic field signaling (EMFS) to wirelessly transmit data through challenging environments such as water, ice, soil, rock and concrete to surface networks. Its core offerings include EM-2 hardware and CSignum Cloud, a dashboard and analytics platform already deployed on several river water quality monitoring projects. Key applications include water quality and environmental monitoring, wireless under-ship monitoring, and security for critical underwater infrastructure such as offshore wind turbines and oil and gas platforms. Founded in 2020, the company is working with customers in the UK, EU and US to address regulatory-driven demand for real-time monitoring. Upcoming compliance deadlines, including AMP8 real-time monitoring mandates, present a significant growth opportunity for its wireless solutions. The company plans to use the funding to expand its engineering team, advance its product portfolio and strengthen its market presence.
