ChapDrive develops a patented hydraulic transmission system for wind turbines. The company is based in Trondheim, Norway and was founded in December 2006, originating from research at NTNU's Department of Energy and Process Engineering. It is focused on commercializing its technology for 5 MW wind turbines with hydraulic transmission for turbine suppliers. ChapDrive is working with Statoil on concept design of a 5 MW hydraulic transmission and expects the first prototype wind turbine with the ChapDrive transmission in 2012. The company plans commercial ramp-up within 3 to 5 years. ChapDrive secured NOK 86m (approximately €11m) in additional funding to enable commercialization.
